What recruits want in their new football home is the assurance that the coaching staff is going to give them the resources to succeed on and off the field.
Mesquite Horn 2016 wide receiver Jared Atkinson understood when he committed to Baylor on Wednesday he could be a part maintaining the success the program has enjoyed. That's just a byproduct.
"I did a lot of thinking about it,'' Atkinson said. "I just knew this was the right decision for me. It's the coaching staff that did it. They said they are going to help me on and off the field and in the classroom. Most coaches don't actually do that.''
Call this the first major recruit new Baylor wide receivers coach Tate Wallis has brought to the program. Atkinson said he and Wallis got off to a good start and continued to build their relationship over the last month.
Atkinson came to Baylor for an unofficial visit on May 31. He and his parents had a tour of the campus and the facilities. There were also extended discussions between Atkinson's parents and the staff.
"It's great because coach Wallis and I talk a lot,'' Atkinson said. "We talk so much about other things than football. That meant a lot.''
Atkinson becomes the 10th member of the 2016 class. At 6-3, 205, he presents a major target who has uncommon speed for someone his size. His personal best in the 100 is 10.52 and 21.26 in the 200. He said only competed in the District 10-6A track meet in April because of right hamstring injury.
But big plays are his specialty. In a secondary role with the Jaguars last fall, he made the most of his 26 touches (416 total yards, 10-216 receiving, 16-197 rushing). Atkinson averaged 15.9 yards per play but 21.6 yards per reception. He played behind Jarrison Stewart who signed with TCU in February.
Now, Atkinson should be one of the focal points of the 2016 offense along with quarterback Chris Robison, whom Baylor continues to track.
"We're going to put on big show for the Horn fans,'' Atkinson said. "It's a blessing to know that a school that has success with receivers thought this much of me and looked at me.''
Atkinson said he believes he is going to shut down his recruiting and not consider any other programs. He holds eight offers including Iowa State and Texas Tech of the Big 12.
