Cedar Hill's Fleeks saw the difference in Baylor

Surprises usually can be pretty fun.

So imagine what Baylor head coach Matt Rhule was thinking when Josh Fleeks came to search him out at the end of Saturday’s junior day.

The Cedar Hill 2018 slash player (wide receiver/running back) had all that he needed to know during his daylong visit to the Baylor campus. He was ready to join the 2018 class.

“I had been thinking about this for a few days,’’ Fleeks said. “When I was talking to coach [Joey McGuire] at the end of the junior day, we were just talking and catching up. I told him I wanted to commit. He brought me to coach Rhule who was definitely surprised.

“Coach Rhule just told me that he was more than excited in my committing and that I was what they needed for the 2018 class.’’

Fleeks is one of the first two members of Baylor’s group that is more than off to a good start. He’s held other offers from the likes of Colorado and Tennessee.

Before the event formally began, Fleeks met with Rhule, McGuire and other Baylor coaches. He simply asked what they saw for him in the program. It was pretty much an open-ended response: wide receiver, running back, punt returner and kick returner. When you have 4.48 speed, you want to use it wherever you can and as much as you can. Thus, the response.

So as the day progressed through the tour of the facilities, locker rooms and other locations, that discussion had him thinking even harder about making his decision. It also offered the chance for him to reunite with McGuire, his former high school coach at Cedar Hill.

Fleeks said he has met with coaches from other college staffs. However, he noted the difference between how they presented themselves and how the Baylor coaching staff presented itself.

“I didn’t think the staff was going to be like that,’’ Fleeks said. “Really, they came across as a family. I didn’t think they were going to be any different than other coaches. You can tell they looked it at like a business.’’

Fleeks, though, understands the recruiting process hasn't finished. Other schools are probably going to offer. Some may see if he’s willing to take a look. That’s just how this works. There’s a long way to go until Feb. 7, 2018. Baylor knows that too.

“I’m not saying I’m totally shutting it down,’’ Fleeks said. “But I know this was a big decision. I believe in what the coaches are doing. I think in a couple of years, they’re going to have a pretty good situation. It’s exciting to know I’m committed to Baylor. It feels good.’’
