SicEmSports breaks down Baylor's depth chart for the 2016 season. In the forthcoming charts of this series, the 2015 season has already been accrued. It will also do a little speculation on those who are not on campus yet but who may have a chance to be on the field. These charts are always subject to change through roster attrition or for other reasons.
This segment: Running backs, offensive line & tight end
Running back is straightforward with the Bears. Freshmen redshirt. The Bears are deep at running back, but it’s a position that can thin out through injury.
For this year, Shock Linwood, Johnny Jefferson and Devin Chafin are the lead guys, but there’s a possibility of Chafin getting lost in the mix.
JaMycal Hasty has used his red shirt, so there’s a chance of a four player log jam at a position where the Bears often only have one player on the field at a time. Shock Linwood used his redshirt as a freshman in 2012, and enters his last year of eligibility in 2016. He’s being held out of spring camp, as the coaching staff wants to make sure his leg is fully healed.
Chafin used his redshirt as a freshman in 2012, and also enters his last year of eligibility in 2016. Chafin is a bruising runner who’s style gets him banged up. Jefferson redshirted in 2013, and has seen action the last two seasons. He has two years of eligibility remaining. He’s confident and likely would love to use his Russell Athletic Bowl performance as a springboard to a big role this year. Wyatt Schrepfer is a transfer from the Colorado School of Mines after playing eight man football in high school. He's a squad player.
Terence Williams redshirted his freshman year and has three years left. He’s looked decent in blowout games, but the Bears turned to Jefferson when their starters went down. Williams has an uphill climb this year, and has two four star players coming up behind him. Hasty has four years left. Kameron Martin is the only running back in the 2016 class. Look for him to be redshirted.
As of now, Baylor has no 2017 commits at running back.
Baylor's offensive line is anything but settled for the 2016 season. The only known is that center Kyle Fuller returns for his senior season. By the time spring football concludes on April 5 and the post spring depth chart is released, it may not be an ironclad lineup.
JUCO transfers Mo Porter and Dominic Desouza were redshirted in 2015 so each has two years remaining. As we have reported, expect 2016 newcomers Patrick Hudson and J.P. Urquidez to potentially figure into the rotation this fall. It's not a given either or both will redshirt.
As for tight end Tight End, the Bears have recently moved personnel from other position groups, but they’ve started targeting higher ranked tight ends. Whether this indicates the tight end may start being featured more in the Baylor offense is unknown.
2013 - Chris Johnson is currently in as a slash TE/WR. He redshirted his freshman year, and so has two years remaining. His stints when he played QB were not successful, but his athleticism has Baylor looking for a way to get him on the field.
2014 - Jordan Feurbacher has seen limited action, and did not redshirt his freshman year. He’s been adequate when on the field, and has a chance to nail down a starting role this year. The expectations are that he figures heavily into the mix in the fall.
Jayson Clements is a transfer from Stephen F. Austin. His father, Randy Clements, is the Baylor offensive line coach. He was primarily a blocking tight end at SFA, only catching ten passes in two years, but seeing action in 18 games. He played both of his two seasons at SFA, so unless he burns a redshirt this year, he’ll be eligible through 2017.
2015 - Sam Tecklenburg was all-state at Plano High School, and redshirted his freshman year.
2017 - Kendrick James is the highest rated tight end to sign with Baylor. He is from Waco La Vega High School, 6’5”, 245, and has offers from Oklahoma, TCU, A&M, Michigan, and Miami (FL), among others.
