Iowa State used a 14-5 run over the final 5:36 of first half and never looked back to oust Baylor from the Big 12 tournament, 83-66, in the quarterfinals Thursday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.
The Bears (19-13) have lost their last four and will wait for whatever their NCAA tournament selection will be on Sunday. Iowa State (21-11) snapped a 3-game losing streak and beat the Bears for the first time in three meetings.
Talen Horton-Tucker and Marial Shayock combined for 39 points as the Cyclones shot 51.7 percent from the game and were even more deadly from 3-point range at 13-25. Horton-Tucker and Shayock combined for nine makes.
Baylor started quickly and was back-and-forth. Makai Mason had nine of his 14 in the opening minutes. But he was held in check the rest of the way. A 3-pointer early in the second half narrowed the margin to 41-34. However, the Cyclones scored the next seven and kept the lead in double figures.
The Bear shot 43 percent for the game. They were decent from 3-point range at 36 percent (9-of-25). However, they were plagued by too many cold spells and 14 turnovers. Mario Kegler led the Bears with 16 points. Freshman guard Jared Butler was limited to just four.
