Baylor Blitz: Part II

Now Browning knows
When Kennedale 2017 LB Baron Browning went to the June 1 camp at Baylor, he caught the Baylor coaching staff's attention so much that defensive coordinator Phil Bennett offered him.

The only problem was that Browning didn't know.
"I kinda thought they offered me and when I talked to my head coach [Richard Barrett], he said I would know if I Baylor did,'' Browning said. "But I talked to the Baylor coaches again on Friday, and I knew it this time.''
Browning (6-3, 215) did his camp encore by coming to Baylor's satellite camp Friday at Lake Highlands. He did nothing short to impress again. As one observer said, "You just don't see that with someone that size for 14 years old. He's incredible.''
Baylor became Browning's first offer. More should follow. He went through every drill wearing what should be his patented glasses. You could call him Clark Kent.
"I just really worked on my feet to get them faster,'' he said. "It's amazing what can happen if you listen. I thought I did OK on my man to man and zone.''
But Browning is not going to let this offer get to his head. And he shouldn't. He has three years to play and a lot can happen. However, Baylor made it known what it thinks.
Broadnax makes his case
Dallas Bryan Adams DT Joe Broadnax came to Lake Highland to make an impression with the Baylor coaches.
The TCU commit did everything that was asked in every drill. He understood that this was probably a make-or-break performance for him to earn the Baylor offer he covets. While he left without one, that doesn't mean Baylor isn't ready to extend. It may take some time because this was the first time he could work out in front of them.
"It was pretty physical out there,'' Broadnax said. "I expected it to be that way. I went against [Sherman] Aaron Garza and thought it went pretty good. I know I had to impress out there. But I know this is a process.''
The 3-star recruit has been committed to TCU on Feb. 27. That appears to be a decision he wished he could re-visit.
"I love TCU, but I think I committed too early,'' he said. "I want to see what else is out there.''
Duvernay takes it in
Sachse 2016 WR Devin Duvernay didn't go through Friday's camp. He was an observer. That seems a bit unusual for someone who just finished his sophomore season.
Of course, the Baylor coaching staff already knows what he can do. Duvernay's twin brother Donovan worked out in front of the coaches. While Duvernay has seen how the Baylor coaches work, he saw them in a different light.
"It's been great because I got to see them coach differently and how they work with the younger guys,'' he said. "I really like Baylor because they have an offense that can fit for what I'm doing. I could see me being a part of something like that.''
Duvernay is not close to committing. He said he had a pretty good spring season and believes the Mustangs can be a playoff team in 2014. Now, he will focus on the 7-on-7 season.
Jackson is fast
Cedar Hill 2017 running back Jaylon Jackson never has a reason to not smile. Well, he had a reason to keep wearing it Friday.
He had a strong performance in front of the Baylor coaches. Jackson moved from running back to wide receiver and didn't miss a beat.
"It was great. I love Baylor,'' Jackson said. "The one thing about their coaches is that they are always upbeat. They keep you working and are always going fast.''
In other words, that's just what Jackson is used to when he's practicing and playing for the Longhorns. Jackson picked up a couple of tips on hand placement when it comes to receiving. Jackson was so determined to make an impression he gave up the chance to play for Cedar Hill's 7-on-7 team which played in a state qualifier tournament in DeSoto.
"I just felt like I had to be here for it,'' Jackson said. "I think I have their attention.''
Notable
>Officially, there were 350 campers at Lake Highlands. I know we previously reported 275 but that was a rough estimate.
>Sherman offensive lineman Aaron Garza was also there tonight going through the offensive line drill. But the OL need for the 2015 class is tight. With Sam Tecklenburg and Mo Porter committed, there's probably room for one more.
>Richardson Pearce 2015 DE Trevis Gipson is every bit 6-5, 200. But it seems that Baylor has him further down on its list.
>You have to like Dallas Kimball 2017 WR/RB L.T. Jessie (5-8, 152). There were several times when Art Briles pulled him aside to talk with him.
>Sachse 2016 DB Jared Mayden did nothing to disappoint with his camp experience. He was quick and a total menace toward receivers in just about every drill. Remember, Baylor was one of the first schools to offer him.
>Wylie East 2017 RB Eno Benjamin opened some eyes with his camp performance.
>Rockwall-Heath 2015 QB Jordan Hoy is still working to keep people watching him. He was at Lake Highlands.
>Plano Prestonwood 2016 LB DeOnte Williams had some pretty decent moments in the camp. Have to wait and see how much Baylor will track him.
>Arlington wide receivers Kristian Levy and Tyler Wilson said they loved every minute of the drill work the coaches put them through.
Marshall Camp
It begins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Marshall HS Stadium. Expect Hope AR 2016 DE McTelvin Agim to be there. Shreveport and Bossier City, LA should be well represented with Bossier City Parkway 2015 OL Kameron Eloph and teammate 2016 DB C.J. Morgan.
