WACO, Texas – Baylor All-American forward Johnathan Motley will enter the 2017 NBA Draft, but he will not hire an agent in order to retain his one remaining year of collegiate eligibility.
As an early entrant, Motley will have until May 24 to decide whether to remain in the draft or return to Baylor for his senior season.
“Johnathan had a tremendous junior season, and he became one of the all-time Baylor greats,” head coach Scott Drew said. “Entering his name into the draft without hiring an agent gives him a chance to get feedback from NBA teams and make an informed decision for his future. We want what’s best for him and his family, and Baylor Nation will fully support him along the way.”
A Houston native, Motley became the first consensus All-American in program history when he was named to the AP All-America second team last week. He also earned the 2017 Karl Malone Award given by the Basketball Hall of the Fame to the top power forward in college basketball, becoming the first player in program history to win a major award.
Additionally, Motley was a second-team All-America selection by the USBWA, NABC and Sporting News, and those organizations combined with the AP to select consensus All-America first and second teams. Motley picked up second-team consensus All-America honors.
Motley finished his junior season averaging 17.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 blocks in 30.5 minutes per game. He led the Big 12 in rebounding and double-doubles (15), ranked fourth in scoring, fifth in field goal percentage (.521), 12th in blocks and 15th in free throw percentage (.699). His numbers were even better in Big 12 play, when he ranked second in the league in scoring (18.4) and led the conference in rebounding (10.8).
Motley helped Baylor to a 27-8 record and the program’s fourth Sweet 16 appearance in the last eight seasons. The Bears were ranked No. 1 nationally for the first time in program history and earned a school-record fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth.
