Samples expects full recovery
Holding in excess of 30 scholarship offers, it's likely that just about every school held its breath when Dallas Skyline's Ra'Shaad Samples went down to injury at last Sunday's Nike Football Training Camp at the Dallas Cowboys practice facility in Irving, Texas.
During a one-on-one drill, Samples suffered a fracture in his left fibula around his ankle.
"I was just running a rout and jumped for a ball that I was nowhere close to catching,'' Samples said. "I was horse collared. And as I was coming down, I should have just landed on my butt. But I came down on and put a little more weight on my left side. It popped out but then it popped right back in so there wasn't any dislocation.''
The good news is that Samples said his ligaments weren't affected so that makes it realistic that he can return within the next two months. At this point it doesn't appear surgery will be needed.
Oddly enough, it's the second time the
Rivals 250 standout (currently ranked No. 191) suffered the same injury. Toward the end of his sophomore year when he was working out and somebody accidentally stepped on the ankle.
"It was just a freak accident,'' Samples said of the first injury. "I really worked hard on the rehab and I think I made it stronger than the right side. But I really expect to be running and jumping around late May or early June. I'll be fine.''
Knowing his ability to be an absolute game changer (21.1 yards per catch and a TD reception every 3.4 receptions), Samples' stock shouldn't be affected. In fact, he recently added to his offer list with Illinois, Washington, Washington St. and Central Florida. Of course, Baylor was one is early offers and the Bears remain very much in the running.
At this point, Samples said he is in no hurry on making a commitment decision. He would like to visit several more schools. So far, he's visited TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Texas and Oklahoma State. There hasn't been a recent visit to Baylor but he knows that campus based on several previous visits including camps.
"[Brian] Norwood and I talked last week,'' Samples said. "He invited me down to their Pro Day but I couldn't make it because I had Pre-Calculus test. I passed.''
The Dallas-Fort Worth wide receiver community is pretty connected. Samples took note when Wylie East's VeQuan Jones committed to the Bears on Monday.
"Quan's a good friend of mine,'' Samples said. "Baylor was my childhood favorite school. Baylor is pretty strong. I know the coaches so I'm comfortable with them.''
Samples said he plans on taking the SAT on April 13.
